Frozen oven fries? ” They don’t all have the potato “. It is the clear statement of 60 Million consumers in his newly published special issue Eat healthy, good and cheap. Contrary to what one might think, this type of product, very popular with children in particular, is far from containing only potatoes and oil, as is the case with homemade fries. Some frozen fries even display a list of more than… 14 ingredients!

The most expensive frozen fries aren’t the best

In order to determine which were the best frozen fries on the market, the magazine specializing in consumer protection screened nine packages available in supermarkets. One is signed by a national brand, McCain. The other eight come from distributor brands: Aldi, Auchan, Carrefour, Casino, E.Leclerc, Intermarché, Lidl and Picard. Verdict? As often, the most expensive are not always the best.

Lidl’s frozen fries take first place

Test bed firsts: oven fries harvest basket from Lidl. Without added salt or sugar, they display only two ingredients (potato and sunflower oil) and are also sold at a low price, €1.29. For 60 Million consumersthe recipe of the German giant ” looks like homemade “. Right behind is the classic Picard reference, which contains three ingredients, including added sugar.

Scrutinize the potato content and the list of ingredients

Bad points, on the other hand, for six packages of fries out of nine which present a list of ingredients ” long as the arm “, or from 10 to 14. Among these undesirables: dextrose, dextrin, modified starch… So many indices of “ ultratransformation » preparations. So as not to be mistaken at the time of purchase, it is better to scrutinize the list of ingredients, which must therefore be as short as possible, as well as the potato content. Lidl fries, for example, have a rate of 96%. The worst ones fall below the 90% mark.

Lidl’s ‘Harvest Basket’ frozen fries are the best. They contain only two ingredients and have no added sugar or salt.
